Conference Football Fun Facts
The American Athletic Conference, known as the AAC, is the successor to the Big East Conference, which dissolved in 2013. The conference powerhouses are the University of Cincinnati, the University of Houston, and the University of Central Florida. AAC teams have appeared in bowl games and in top ten rankings many times. The AAU is not known for intra-conference rivalries, but Navy and Southern Methodist University compete most years. They play regularly for the Gansz Trophy.
The ACC is a storied conference with programs that have been tops in college football throughout their existence. Among them are the Miami Hurricanes, who have been playing since 1926. They’re considered the #4 program of all time, tied with the likes of USC and Ohio State. They have some of the longest winning streaks in Division I history and have sent more players to the NFL in the first round of the draft more frequently than any other team, and in 2004, six Miami players got picked in the first round.
The Big Ten conference is the oldest Division I collegiate conference in the US. It features the highest level of competition. Dozens of Big Ten players are drafted into the NFL every year. Particular schools are even known for sending players at certain positions to the NFL. Wisconsin is known as "Running Back U," while Penn State has a reputation as "Linebacker U."
As a Power 5 conference, the Big 12 sends many players to the NFL every year. In 2010, Oklahoma became the first team in history to have three of its players picked not just in the first round, but in the first four pics of the draft. Oklahoma has sent about 400 players to the NFL since the draft began in 1936, and other teams in the conference have posted similar numbers. Texas has sent over 300, and even Iowa State has over 100 NFL players to its name.
College football teams in the Conference USA (CUSA) represent universities in the Southeast and Southwest. Teams include Old Dominion, University of Alabama-Birmingham, Louisiana Tech, and Western Kentucky University. It has also been in pictures. Marshall University in West Virginia was the subject of the film We Are Marshall. It’s about Marshall’s football program in the wake of a 1970 plane crash that killed all 37 members of its football team and many coaches and staff. The movie takes its title from Marshall’s rallying cry.
College football teams in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) represent universities in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and New York. They span from the University at Buffalo in the East to Western Michigan University in the West. The league has five affiliated bowl games: the Miami Beach Bowl, the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl, the GoDaddy Bowl, the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, and the Camellia Bowl. The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl is played on the campus of Boise State, and it’s the longest running cold weather college bowl game currently being played.
The Mountain West college football conference has 12 member universities in Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, and California. Play in the Mountain West is marked by intra-conference rivalries. Teams like Air Force and Hawaii, Fresno State and San Diego State, Colorado State and Wyoming, and Nevada and UNLV play for such prizes as the Kuter Trophy, the Old Oil Can, the Bronze Boot, and the Fremont Cannon. Mountain West teams have affiliations with six bowl games including the Hawai'i Bowl and the New Orleans Bowl as well as the College Football Playoffs.
The history of Pac-12 football spans more than 100 years and includes numerous national champions and Heisman Trophy winners. This season presents even more excitement with five new head coaches adding to the Conference's rich history, including familiar names from UCLA's Chip Kelly and Arizona State's Herm Edwards to Arizona's Kevin Sumlin. The Pac-12 made noise in the 2018 NFL Draft, which saw former Pac-12 quarterbacks Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen taken in the top 10 picks. The Conference looks to again feature elite-level talent, especially at the quarterback positions, all with the potential to add to the current slate of NFL quarterbacks and former Pac-12 standouts like Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck and Nick Foles, or Marcus Mariota, Jared Goff and Alex Smith.
The rivalry between the Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers is the defining rivalry in a conference defined by its rivalries. Their annual meeting is known as the Iron Bowl, and it is a national event. Hundreds of players who have competed in the Iron Bowl have gone on to play in the NFL since the league began its draft process in 1936.
The twelve college football teams in the Sun Belt conference represent universities in the Southern U.S. These include high profile teams Appalachian State and Georgia Southern. The rivalries in this conference are colorful. Start with Appalachian State and Georgia Southern. Their rivalry is referred to as Deeper Than Hate. So it’s intense. There is the Battle on the Bayou between Louisiana-Lafyette and Louisiana-Monroe. The winner of that matchup takes home the Wooden Boot. And the oldest rivalry is between Middle Tennessee and Troy State. It dates to 1936.
Four college football programs remain independent of NCAA conferences. They are Army, BYU, UMass, and Notre Dame. Though unaffiliated, these college football programs are eligible for play in NCAA Division I bowl games. And they do. Notre Dame has a standing deal to play in the Orange Bowl under certain conditions, but they compete in other bowl games as well. Army is similarly eligible for invitations to bowl games including the Military Bowl and the Armed Forces Bowl.
