Group D Opponents & The 48-Team Format Explained
The structure of the FIFA World Cup 2026™ is easy as ABC (and D through L). Qualifying nations are split into 12 Groups for four teams each. During the Group Stage of the tournament, the teams play each other, with a win earning a team 3 points, a draw 1 point, and no points for a loss. After all teams have played each other, the two teams with the most points advance (goal differential is the first tiebreaker).
The U.S. drew into Group D, along with Paraguay, Australia, and the UEFA Playoff C winner Türkiye. According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Team USA has the best odds of winning Group D at +105, followed by Türkiye at +230, Paraguay at +310, and Australia at +1000. In addition to the top two teams from Groups A-L, the eight best third-place teams will also advance to the Round of 32. Follow this link for the complete FIFA World Cup 2026™ schedule.
USMNT’s Home-Soil Advantage
Unlike tournament co-hosts Canada and Mexico, the U.S. will never have to travel internationally in the tournament. In the Group Stage, they will play their first and third matches at SoFi Stadium (redubbed Los Angeles Stadium at the World Cup), home of the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and Chargers. Sandwiched between those games, the U.S. will travel to Seattle for a match against Australia at Lumen Field – Seattle Stadium – which is home to the Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks, as well as the MLS’ Seattle Sounders FC and NWSL’s Seattle Reign FC.
Potential Knockout Pathways: The Road to the Final
Depending on where the U.S. finishes in group D, there are a couple of different roads they would travel.
If USA wins Group D: Their road travels through Santa Clara (Round of 32), Seattle (Round of 16), Los Angeles (Quarterfinal), and Arlington (Semifinal).
If USA finishes 2nd in Group D: The path would go through Arlington (Round of 32) and Atlanta (Round of 16/Semifinal).
All pathways lead to the Final at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey on July 19.
FIFA World Cup 2026™ gets underway on Thursday, June 11.
