The Expanded 48-Team Tournament Format Explained

If you find yourself wondering why there are so many matches on the schedule this cycle, it is due to a historic format expansion.

  • The Groups: The 48 qualified nations are organized into 12 groups of four teams.

  • The Group Stage Style: Each team plays three group opponents in a standard round-robin hierarchy – one match against the other three teams in the Group.

  • The Knockout Qualification: The top two teams from all 12 groups advance automatically. They will be joined by the eight best third-place teams across the entire field based on points, goal differences, and criteria totals.

  • Single-Elimination Stakes: This creates a brand-new Round of 32 knockout stage, effectively adding an extra layer of do-or-die drama to the bracket.
