Get ready — the epic conclusion is almost here.

Stranger Things 5, the fifth and final season of the beloved sci-fi horror saga, launches on Netflix in three parts this fall. Volume 1 (episodes 1–4) premieres November 26, 2025, Volume 2 drops on Christmas Day, and the grand finale lands on New Year’s Eve, December 31.

Set in the fall of 1987, Hawkins is still reeling after the cataclysms of Season 4. According to official teasers, our heroes must come together for one last mission: find and destroy Vecna, the malevolent force that’s haunted them all this time. Expect tension, nostalgia, sacrifice — and a fight to save not just their town, but their very world.

But before you dive in, here’s a quick primer — a “What You Forgot” look back at key moments from each previous season so you can come in fresh (or re-primed).

‘Stranger Things’ Seasons 1-4 Recap

Season 1: The Upside Down Is Born

  • In 1983, young Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) disappears without a trace in Hawkins, Indiana, sparking panic amongst his mother Joyce (Winona Ryder) and brother Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), along with a desperate search led by Police Chief Jim Hopper (David Harbour).

  • His friends Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) discover a mysterious girl, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), with telekinetic powers, hiding in the woods. We’re also introduced to teenagers Steve (Joe Keery) and Mike’s sister Nancy (Natalia Dyer).

  • We learn about secret experiments at Hawkins Lab, and a terrifying creature — the Demogorgon — from another dimension: the Upside Down.

  • In a dramatic showdown, Eleven seemingly sacrifices herself to defeat the monster. Will is rescued, but the season ends with a chilling hint: he coughs up something, well… not quite human.

Season 2: The Threat Expands

  • Will’s connection to the Upside Down deepens. He begins having cryptic visions, and we realize the demonic presence was only the beginning (not covered in full in season 2, but foundational for what comes).

  • Eleven searches for her past, while new monsters (like Demodogs) emerge from the Upside Down.

  • Relationships deepen: old friendships are tested, and new alliances form, especially with new arrival Max Mayfield (Sadie Sink).

  • The lab’s experiments are more sinister than ever, raising the stakes for everyone in Hawkins.

Season 3: Summer of Chaos

  • Hawkins enters its summer-of-love mode: the mall is built, the kids are growing up, and everything seems “normal” — until it isn’t.

  • A new villainous force arises: the Mind Flayer. It infects and controls, turning people into horrifying hosts, including Max’s stepbrother Billy (Dacre Montgomery).

  • Hopper’s life is disrupted, Eleven’s powers are challenged, and the core group fights to save their town.

  • By the end, there’s a major explosion — but not everything is as it seems. Cliffhangers abound.

Season 4: Vecna’s Return and the Cost of Power

  • This season takes us deeper into Eleven’s origin: she relives her traumatic childhood at Hawkins Lab and learns about the sinister Henry Creel / One – who becomes Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).

  • A “satanic panic” backdrop raises the tension in Hawkins, and Vecna begins targeting teenagers in horrifying ways.

  • Meanwhile, Joyce and Murray (Brett Gelman) launch a daring mission in Russia to rescue Hopper from a cold war prison.

  • Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) heroically sacrifices himself during a battle with Vecna’s creatures.

  • Max falls into a devastating coma after being used as bait in Vecna’s lair.

  • In the finale, the group confronts Vecna — they appear to defeat him, but the threat remains. Ash begins to fall over Hawkins, and it's clear: the final battle is near.
