The golfing universe will turn its eyes to Charlotte, North Carolina as the season's second major – the PGA Championship – kicks off on Thursday, May 15. The course, Quail Hollow, is the yearly site of the Wells Fargo Championship, and it last hosted the PGA Championship back in 2017 when Justin Thomas snagged his first major title.

Coming off one of the most exciting finishes in recent memory at the Masters, Rory McIlroy enters the week with good feels. The Northern Irishman has excelled at Quail Hollow, winning four times at the venue. Jordan Spieth even went as far to call it ‘Rory McIlory Country Club.’ But plenty of players are coming into the week in great form and with rain dumping in Charlotte early in the week, conditions figure to suit those who hit it long and straight.

Let’s take a look at the TV schedule and our favorite storylines to follow at Quail Hallow. DISH subscribers can enjoy the event starting on Thursday, May 15th at 12pm ET on ESPN. The Course and Weather

There has been a lot of chatter amongst the golf community about the PGA Championship returning to a regular tour stop location. The course at Quail Hollow is by no means bad, but it isn’t special like some of the other venues we’ve visited recently. Hunter Mahan’s comments to The Athletic caught fire this week when he compared the track to the Kardashians saying “I guess I would say Quail Hollow is like a Kardashian. It’s very modern, beautiful and well-kept,” Mahan said before dropping the zinger, “but it lacks a soul or character.”

Ultimately the course will suit those that hit it long and straight, especially with the forecast. Monday was a complete outdoor car wash with players and patrons not even able to practice or see the course. The precipitation has been consistent through the week with Thursday and Sunday looking to be the only sunny days. Despite the ‘sameness’ of most of the holes at Quail Hollow, the opposite can be said of the final three holes. Known as “The Green Mile”, it’s one of the most difficult finishes on Tour, and should provide some added drama as players finish their rounds and come Sunday.

Will Rory McIlroy be freed up or not as hungry?

After 10 years and nearly 40 tries, Rory McIlroy finally won his fifth major. It so happened to be the one that alluded him most and put him in golf history. Rory’s win at Augusta to complete the career grand slam was a roller coaster of emotions as he staved off Justin Rose in a playoff. Now he goes to a course where has dominated. Since 2010, Rory McIlroy’s cumulative score to par is 102 under, by far the best of all players on the tour (the next best score is 47 under par). He has four wins there and has been a course that just perfectly suits his game. The question is: will McIlroy be freed up to go scorch the golf course? Or will his motivation take a hit after completing what he called, “everything I’ve wanted to” in golf. But after the PGA comes the US Open at Oakmont, which is another perfect fit for McIlroy. Then comes the Open Championship at Royal Portrush, which is not only Rory’s home course, but also where he holds the course record, just as he does at Quail Hollow. Winning majors is obviously not easy, and with other players having success since the Masters, we should have a great leaderboard come Sunday.

Bryson, Scottie and JT in Great Form

With Rory’s classic Master’s win, it’s easy to forget about some of the world’s other top players. Don’t. Since the Masters Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas have all won tournaments. The course is a perfect fit for all three. Starting with DeChambeau, the two time US Open Champion finished second in last year’s PGA Championship. He hits it plenty far and whether he hits fairways or not, will be able to gauge approaches onto the green. Since his 4th round blunder at the Masters, DeChambeau has a T2 and a win on LIV. As for Scottie Scheffler, the ‘slow start’ to the season due to his hand injury has been well documented. A slow start for Scottie takes the form of a T2, fourth, T8 and a win in his last four starts, so the world’s number one player will be a factor this week. The only note is the Texas Longhorn has never played Quail Hollow, but the course should fit Scheffler’s game. And then there is Justin Thomas, who won his first major the last time the PGA Championship was at this golf course. Aside from the Masters, JT has had a great season. Two second place finishes and a win sandwich his lackluster performance at Augusta, so it begs the question if JT is ready to bring his A game to Major Championships. The rest of the field has the names you know and love.
