Tips for SXSW

It’s that time of year again, time to get amped about the biggest concerts and music festivals of the year. We all love talking about how much fun we’ll have jamming to our favorite artists, but unfortunately many of these plans never materialize. The only thing worse than failing to get the tickets or the days off work for the festival is going in unprepared. This couldn’t be more true when it comes to South by Southwest, the annual music and arts festival held in Austin, Texas. If you’re planning on going, make sure you’re set up to have a great time by checking out these tips for enjoying the fest:

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
OK, so this one might seem obvious, but it’s surprising how many people overlook this. You need to stay hydrated. It’s Texas and it can get hot. Make sure you’re carrying a water bottle or backpack with you at all times. As GigaOM has pointed out, you may want to consider adding things like Emergen-C or Airborne to your water to boost your immunity while in crowded areas. Bottom line, it’s going to feel like you’re on the sun at SXSW. Be sure to get that H2O as often as possible. No joke. When you’re not busy, you’re drinking…..water!

Are these boots made for walkin’?
One of the worst decisions you can make with concerts is going with fashion over function, especially when it comes to shoes. Sure, big events are a great time to dress up, but not when you have to walk miles to get to each place. Considering that the event runs nine days in total, you’re going to need some seriously durable and comfortable footwear. According to Prezi, you should think carefully about which shoes are going to serve you best. Get the kicks that will last, not the ones that will flash.

Go with something lightweight and breathable but sturdy enough to support you navigating through dense crowds all day. A used pair of running or training shoes from the back of your closet would work perfectly. It’s also helpful to make sure you’re wearing a thick, moisture-wicking pair of socks before you trek off. This will greatly reduce your likelihood of getting blisters which no one wants to deal with.

Have an itinerary
Music festivals are all about having fun and letting go, but if you don’t plan ahead you can miss out on some awesome acts. SXSW has a lot to offer and you surely want to catch as much of it as possible. Why spend time figuring out where and when your favorite acts are coming on while you’re at the festival? Set up your game plan before the event, and when it comes time to rock you can divide and conquer. Go ahead and call up your friends, get together and live out SXSW before it even happens. Be prepared, not overwhelmed.
