A Wintry Mix of Movies

Best Movies to Beat the Blizzard With

Snow days. People tend to have mixed feelings on them. While some may go their entire lives without witnessing a single snowflake and live in places where blasting the air-conditioning on Christmas is the norm, those that happen to reside in four-season states know the phenomenon all too well. Of course, the younger you are, the more you tend to be a fan of such occasions as after all, it is the season for snow angels, igloo-building, and snowball fights galore! If you happen to be the designated household snow-shoveler or whether you’d rather brew up the hot cocoa for the family, all that extra time spent inside and around the house greatly increases the odds of some good old-fashioned TV binging.

If you’re stuck on deciding what to watch, don’t be. DISH’s On Demand library has over 20,000 movies to choose from, guaranteeing something that will cater to everyone in the family. As one would expect, you can also watch pay per view titles of the latest blockbusters that come out in theaters on DISH as well. If you really want to get into the snow day spirit, you don’t even have to sit in front of the TV either! You always have the option of truly hibernating in your bed, and watching your favorite shows with DISH Anywhere. What could be better than that?

If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. That’s the idea behind beating the cold outside by staying in and binging on your favorite cinemas that fit the scene. Here, we have some suggestions:

Snow Day

Ok, this is the obvious choice. As one can probably guess, this flick involves snow days and school closings. However, the intrigue comes from a group of kids conspiring to keep it that way. A good amount of hijinks abound in this comedy piece- just try to keep the teens from getting any bright ideas.

Fargo

The weather outside might not be the only thing that is frightful when you watch this particular flick. This crime drama set in 1980’s Minnesota starring William H. Macy makes for an entertaining spectacle, and one sure to make you extremely grateful that you’re safe and sound inside.

Ice Age Franchise

Animated sloths, mammoths, and tigers adventuring together against dinosaurs and pirates in the middle of the frozen tundra? That’s exactly what happens in this rather unique series of movies, and is just the tip of the iceberg to boot. Don’t believe us? Then go ahead and see for yourself, as this screenplay is one that is sure to appease all ages.

Dumb and Dumber

This hilarious classic starring Jim Carrey is one that has arguably developed a cult following in the years following its release in 1994. Carry and Jeff Daniels’ characters make for sure-fire comedic gold as they galivate their way cross-country, navigating icy conditions, crooks who mean them harm, and the like. The creators of 21 Jump Street might even admit that they got their initial inspiration from here.

Little Women

Set during Civil War era Massachusetts, this tale of the four March sisters is one that is sure to warm your heart. Follow along as they gracefully maneuver just about every hardship life has to offer, such as family drama, financial adversity, romance woes, and more. If you’re a fan of the Golden Girls, then you’re sure to enjoy this particular film.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

This movie may be the perfect choice to watch with the kids. While the wintry landscape in this motion picture is actually the result of a spell cast by the evil witch villain of the movie, it also makes for an extremely fitting backdrop for the magical entertainment and otherwise enchanted adventures that take place throughout the film.

500 Days of Summer

Why not break up the lineup of glacial motion pictures by giving us all something to look forward to? While not entirely about beach season as the title might imply, this nonlinear piece starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel breaks away from the traditional rom-com modus operandi and is sure to make the hours spent watching it fly by- just like summer itself.
