NBC Workplace Comedies ‘St. Denis Medical’ and ‘Night Court’ Return

Key art for 'Night Court' on NBC.

Just as America’s workforce is settling back into office life following the holiday break, NBC’s hit workplace comedies St. Denis Medical and Night Court are back on the job. Although they’re very different shows in both their look and the tone of their humor, at their core, both mine laughs out of unconventional settings for half-hour sitcoms. Here’s a preview of both shows ahead of their midseason return. St. Denis Medical airs on NBC at 8/7c, followed by Night Court at 8:30/7:30c (check your DISH guide for your local NBC channel). Where to Watch St. Denis Medical, season 1, episode 7 – “50 CC’s of Kindness”

St. Denis Medical has been one of the breakout hits of the fall, as it became “NBC’s highest-rated scripted broadcast series premiere in the 18-49 demo (without an NFL lead-in) in nearly two years,” according to Deadline. That description may be loaded with qualifiers, but the point is, the show is popular and more importantly, it’s great. As with the best workplace comedies, the ensemble has great characters and palpable chemistry. Led by Bridesmaids’ Wendi McLendon-Covey, Fargo’s Allison Tolman, and In Living Color veteran David Alan Grier, St. Denis Medical has a lot of the quirky charm of The Office (along with its mockumentary format), but it’s also highly empathetic toward the overtaxed healthcare workers and the patients they treat. Check out our exclusive interview with McLendon-Covey and Tolman below:

Where to Watch Night Court, season 3, episode 5 – “Mayim Worst Enemy”

On the other side of the workplace comedies coin, Night Court is a classic multicamera sitcom filmed live in front of a studio audience. Comedy fans of a certain vintage will remember the original sitcom, which ran on NBC from 1984 to 1992. The new version is a direct sequel, which features Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory) as Judge Abby Stone, the daughter of original Night Court judge Harry Stone. John Larroquette is back as the sarcastic public defender Dan Fielding, along with sitcom all-star Wendie Malick as a district attorney and former flame of Feilding who is set on getting revenge on him.

In a recent interview with DISH, Malick praised the show’s distinct characters. “I think the secret sauce, and what makes any ensemble work, is if they all have their own particular place in that universe,” Malick said. “[If] each of them brings something different to the dance, that’s usually a recipe for a really good show.” That’s certainly the case with Night Court, which is filled out with great support turns from Lacretta as the bailiff, and Nyambi Nyambi as court clerk Wyatt Shaw.

Tonight’s midseason premiere features a guest appearance from Mayim Bialik, Rauch’s Big Bang Theory co-star and former NBC sitcom star herself; those old enough to remember the original Night Court may also recall Bialik’s early ‘90s sitcom Blossom. Check out a few images from the cleverly-titled “Mayim Worst Enemy” below, and be sure to tune-in to NBC tonight at 8pm ET to catch the midseason premieres of both St. Denis Medical and Night Court!
