Thanks to their success on the court and the (literally) larger than life personalities off of it—including the team’s owner, Dr. Jerry Buss, star players Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabar, and personnel like GM Jerry West and coach Pat Riley—the Los Angeles Lakers’ “Showtime” era of the ‘80s was one of the most dramatic periods in NBA history. Fittingly, we’re about to get a dramatic adaptation of the legendary team, a limited series that itself was not without drama.
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty premieres Sunday, March 6 at 9pm on HBO. The show is executive produced by Adam McKay (director of Anchorman and the Netflix satire Don’t Look Up). Winning Time also features an appropriately star-studded cast that includes John C. Reilly as Buss, Jason Clarke as West, and Adrien Brody as Pat Riley, along with comparative newcomers Quincy Isaiah as Magic and Dr. Solomon Hughes as Kareem, plus a whole bunch of familiar actors portraying real people, most of whom will .
The new limited series is already getting great reviews from critics, and it toplines another busy month for HBO and its streaming service HBO Max (remember, HBO subscribers with DISH can also access all HBO Max content by entering their DISH credentials when signing into the app).
