Vegas Golden Knights on the Brink of First Stanley Cup

They may have lost the “Las” in their city’s name, but the Vegas Golden Knights aren’t losing much else these days. Following a testy 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers in game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final on Saturday, the Golden Knights are one win away from the team’s first world championship. Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final goes down Tuesday, June 13 from the T-Mobile Arena on the Las Vegas strip. Watch the game live beginning at 8pm ET on TNT.

If Vegas can close out the series, the team will match the record six seasons it took the Philadelphia Flyers to win its first Stanley Cup in 1973, after the team joined the NHL during its “expansion” season of 1967. Still, with two Finals appearances and two conference finals appearances in just six seasons, the Golden Knights are the new gold standard for success from expansion teams.

As for Florida – itself an example of early successes after appearing in the Stanley Cup Final in just its third year – the team appears dangerously close to waking up from its dream season. In the first round, not only did they knock out the Boston Bruins – which had just recorded the most points in NHL history – in overtime of the seventh game, they easily dispatched a surging Toronto Maple Leafs team in round two and swept the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Finals. If the Tampa Bay Lightning’s dynasty has come to a close, another one may be beginning in the Sunshine State.

Sunrise, Florida and Las Vegas may not be the first places we think of for hockey, but in the next week, one of those cities is about to become Hockey Town, USA.
