Take a Winter Staycation with DISH
One of the great discoveries of our time, surely, is the staycation. Only today can we treat our homes like a tourist destination. The kings and queens of yesteryear, living in vast palaces, would leave for other palaces in other places when they wanted rest and relaxation. That is because their entertainment options, quite simply, were inferior. Court jesters get tired. You can only look at your paintings so many times. Things have changed.
Today, your home is an entertainment galaxy, and DISH puts worlds of enjoyment at your fingertips. Never has a staycation been so enticing. Take one for your mental health! Take one so you don’t have to go out in the cold! Take one to binge-watch the shows everyone is talking about! And let the whole family staycation with you! Everyone can watch exactly what they want to watch on their personal device with DISH Anywhere, or using the whole-home capabilities of the Hopper 3.
There really is something good on for everyone. These shows take you to places exotic and fanciful, so get everyone in their coziest pajamas and jump in.
Youngins will enjoy The Lion Guard, a TV spinoff of the classic 1994 Disney movie The Lion King. The next generation of lion cubs, meerkats, warthogs, and other resident creatures of the Pride Lands take on scheming hyenas and vicious vultures, just as their parents had. The circle of life continues!
Older kids can get caught up in Penny Dreadful, an experimental show that enlists 19th-century literary characters in lurid and paranormal criminal cases. Like, imagine Victor Frankenstein teaming up with Dracula’s Mina Harker to kill vampires. And why not? The kids dig it. Three seasons to stream should keep them happy.
Adults of discerning taste can binge on Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, in which the renowned chef travels the globe, sampling subcultures and local cuisine. Let Tony take you places you probably weren’t going to go anyway, like, for example, war-torn Libya, or Iran. Don’t worry, he’ll be fine! But for a slightly more domestic television tourism experience, you can binge House Hunters International to your heart’s content.
Of course, you can find truly escapist fare, if that’s the kind of staycation you want. We have a few suggestions along those lines. First, you might do well to turn to the Lifetime Movie Network—available in America’s Top 200—and tune in to whatever happens to be on. It’s not strictly a TV series, but LMN produces and curates movies with a special genius, making each seem part of the same, twisted universe. Where else can you find stories in which a woman investigates her daughter’s alleged murder of her teacher (Mommy, I Didn’t Do It) or in which a high school senior realizes her mother is a deranged stalker (Stalked by My Mother) or in which a mother flees two men and the police to protect her son (A Mother’s Escape). It may be a little over-the-top, but it is uniquely delightful for those who have acquired an appreciation for Lifetime’s house style. And it’ll make your staycation worth every minute.
If you take your escapism with added mind games and special effects, you need to binge deep into Westworld. Its mashup of Western and sci-fi genres has audiences riveted. If this is your kind of series, you might already be watching. But if you haven’t gotten to it yet, a winter staycation is just what you need.
It’s what we all need. Happy watching.
