Earnhardt Jr. Takes Checkered Flag at Talladega

(TALLADEGA) — Dale Earnhardt Jr. captured his first checkered flag at Talladega Sunday since 2004.

“It’s just real emotional,” Earnhardt said in the victory lane, seeming to hold back tears. “I haven’t won here in a long time. It was my daddy’sbirthday a couple of days ago, and I’m just real emotional, man.”

The superspeedway is special for the Earnhardt family as this was Junior’s sixth win at the track after his father won ten times.

Last season, Earnhardt failed to come away with the win at the Alabama track due to what he determined to be a failed strategy. He swore that he would never approach it the same way again.

“Even if I wreck … we’re going to be racing for the lead or trying to anyways,” Earnhardt said. “That’s my mentality ’til I don’t race anymore.”
