Strong female leads on television shows

With writers and producers like Shonda Rhimes, Lena Dunham, Tina Fey and Jenji Kohan, we are finally seeing women at the forefront of television. Shows like How to Get Away with Murder and Orange is the New Black are producing characters who are strong and complicated, much like the women we see in our everyday lives. Here are some of the strongest female characters on television:

Olivia Pope, Scandal

Regardless of the situation, Olivia Pope is there to take care of things. From rigged elections to murder mysteries, Pope always proves herself as smarter and faster than her opponent. However, she always wants to wear the white hat and be a good person. In addition, she is a big advocate of the daily glass of red wine and unwind, which anyone can respect in a lady.

Cristina Yang, Grey’s Anatomy

A list of strong and independent women would not be complete without Cristina Yang. With her feisty personality and brains, she was one of the top surgeons on the show. In addition, she lets nothing come in the way of her career. However, she maintains a great relationship with her best friend and fellow surgeon, Meredith Grey: the true love story on the show.

Daenerys Targaryen, Game of Thrones

Amid all of the chaos on GOT, Daenerys continues as a force to be reckoned with. She believes it is her birthright to control the Seven Kingdoms and will do anything to accomplish this. In addition, she has dragons that could incinerate anyone alive with the simple whisper of “Dracarys.” Ouch.

Olivia Benson, Law & Order SVU

The second Olivia to top this list is classic strong female lead, detective Olivia Benson. She’s fighting the good fight in the Special Victims Unit. Not only is she strong, but she’s also compassionate and caring.

Annalise Keating, How to Get Away With Murder

Viola Davis plays an unrelenting and inspiring law professor and criminal defense attorney. She’s fearless in the classroom and the courtroom. However, often we are shown her emotional and caring side, which is refreshing.

Leslie Knope, Parks & Recreation

If you look up the word passion in the dictionary, it is accompanied by a picture of Leslie Knope, most likely smiling. This show depicts Knope’s role within local government in the fictional town of Pawnee, Indiana. The love she has for her town and the people in it will have you smiling throughout the entirety of the show.
